Recently my Vista bit system crashed. But ATI would not allow me to restore my files to their original location! That option was grayed out. The only option was to restore to a different location, but this did not permit me to boot up the system! I had depended on True Image backup and it let me down, big time. Trying to see this situation in a positive light, I thought that maybe this might be a good time to upgrade to Windows 7 bit. So I purchased a copy of Windows 7 and formatted the C drive on the crashed system of course losing all of my data in the process and spent a good solid week working every day installing all of my favorite programs and tweaks.
Finally I got it to the point where I like it and I thought that maybe this would be a good time to do a backup image of the new system. Don't ask me why, but I thought that as long as I paid for this program Acronis True Image Home, I might as well use it this was my second mistake! When I ran the program for the first time it insisted that I engage "one-click protection" of my system. When I try to boot up the system I get the error message: Status: 0xc The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
What has Acronis done to the MBR? I tried to do a system restore using the Windows 7 install DVD, but niether the Win 7 system nor the hard drive is listed there! Consequently there is no way to restore! As several other reviewers have mentioned, tech support is hard to come by. They want you to pay for support! The email tech support option is cleverly hidden is a nest of choices on the Acronis website, but I did find it. After 3 urgent emails I have not received any response other than the automated "your problem has been duly noted" response.
After a long week of working every day on building the new system, I am left with a useless machine that will not boot up at all. Thank you, Acronis! If I ever do get my system up and running again the first thing that I am going to do is remove all vestiges of Acronis True Image Home. Good luck if you want to use this software! They not only assisted me in fixing the boot problem with my PC, but gave me an upgrade to their product that is more suitable for Windows 7.
Thus far I have made several successful backups using True Image, and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks Acronis. Once in a while I will get an error message, but I have been able to connect with the solution on the Acronis forums, as direct support for this version is no longer offered.
I feel that this is a fairly reliable product to maintain backups or clones of your data. Given that bad reviews for this product outnumber good ones, my usual caveat for software applies twice over for this one - please download a trial version and give it a practice run before you actually purchase it.
My first experience with Acronis True Image began with version 11 - which I had a very low regard for, as it simply didn't meet my criteria for intuitive and reliable software. I'm glad to report that True Image far exceeded my initial expectations from this software.
I've been using it regularly now for a few weeks, and I have yet to experience a system freeze or lock up. I've also yet to see a backup or recovery option fail to complete successfully. In addition, I have entrusted the backup of my primary workstation over to this software - not something I take lightly.
So what do I like about this software? The user interface is very intuitive - with a tab for each major function such as Backup, Recovery, and for scheduled tasks. Within each tab, the options to available are likewise very straightforward.
The backup process is also very straightforward. You pick the folders or file types you want to back up, and then pick a destination. If you're a control freak like me , then you can knock yourself out with a ton of options such as AES encryption, or automatic scheduling. The recovery mechanism is likewise extremely simple to use.
You can mount a. And, then browse through your backup using Windows Explorer. It doesn't get any easier than that. The help text is surprisingly very good - but still needs some occasional help. For instance, trying to unravel the differences between Incremental and Differential backups required a trip to the Acronis web site. There are some nifty tools that are provided as well - such as a Drive Cleanser, a drive clone tool, etc.
Conclusion: Note that there are some advanced feature that look interesting, but are probably more trouble than they are worth. As a result, I haven't turned on either of these on my machine. Similarly, the Nonstop Backup function lets you back up changes to a selected partition on very short intervals - almost letting your backup software serve as a version control system.
I can see this as an interesting feature. Bottom line is that this is by far the most intuitive backup software I've used - and I've been enjoying using it. As I said earlier, I'd highly recommend that you try running this software on your hardware before deciding to buy it.
Happy Backing Up! While the service is offered at a great price, I'm not going to be shifting from my current provider, iDrive.
A key requirement for me is to back up files from an external USB drive, and I require that my provider not delete my files from their servers just because my USB drive was not connected to my workstation for an extended period. Some providers will delete their online copies if they do not detect the files on the external drive for 30 days. Providers often make a distinction between "backup" and "archival" services.
I sleep better when I have an "archival" service to watch my back. If Acronis Online works for you, then there's another reason for you to consider this backup software. Get fast answers from reviewers. Please make sure that you are posting in the form of a question.
